Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) Solutions
Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) – Strong, Lightweight Molded Parts
Engineered Composites Incorporated (ECI) manufactures quality molded parts using sheet molding compound (SMC) materials. Utilized for a wide range of end products, SMC is a proven, cost-effective thermoset composite that offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio combined with resistance to weathering and corrosion.
Our SMC-based molded products are backed by over 30 years of compression molding experience, in-house tooling and design capabilities, and a vertically integrated operation that ensures complete control from raw materials to finished products.
SMC Composite Molding Capabilities at ECI:
- In-house SMC manufacturing
- Compression molding with presses up to 4,000 tons
- Custom-designed tooling
- Design for manufacturability (DFM) consultation and prototyping
- Robotic trimming, punching, and CNC finishing
- In-mold coating for high-quality surfaces
- Integrated assembly and packaging
The Material Properties of Molded SMC Materials:
Customers new to the industry often compare SMC to bulk molded compound (BMC) – another material offered at ECI. Essentially, our SMC composites are ideal for manufacturing larger and relatively flat parts. It’s also ideal for many designs that require relatively simple contours and other part features. (By comparison, our BMC composites are optimized for smaller, more complex parts that demand tighter tolerances and process controls.)
- High Strength-to-Weight Ratio – Reinforced with long glass fibers for improved strength and structural load-bearing.
- Dimensional Stability – Relatively low shrinkage rate and risk of warping, even for large and/or complex parts.
- Resistance to Weathering and Corrosion– Resistant to water, common chemicals, and UV damage, SMC is ideal for outdoor use and some harsh environments.
- Electrical Insulation – A non-conductive material suitable for many electrical applications.
- Excellent Mold Surface Finish – Compatible with Class A surface requirements.
- Fire-Retardant Options – Low smoke and flame SMC formulations available.
- Thermal Stability – Performs reliably in high-temperature environments with minimal material distortion.
- Paintable and Custom Color Matching – Various in-mold coating and pigmentation options.
The Advantages of SMC for Your Custom Molded Composites:
SMC is a ready-to-mold composite material made from chopped glass fibers (typically 1 – 2 inches in length), polyester or vinyl ester resin, fillers, and additives. It is formed into a sheet and stored in rolls or stacks until ready for compression molding.
SMC combines excellent mechanical properties, surface quality, and dimensional stability, making it ideal for both structural and cosmetic applications.
Some typical sheet molded composite products manufactured at ECI include:
- Aerospace Composites – Equipment housings and enclosures, composite panels, covers, and structural brackets
- Construction and Architecture – Structural panels, utility enclosures, and façade systems
- Marine and Boating – Corrosion-resistant deck components and enclosures
- HVAC – Insulated housings, fan shrouds, duct components, enclosure panels with thermal and acoustic insulation properties
- Automotive and Transportation – Body panels, underbody shields, load floors, and battery enclosures
