Durable Protective Plastic Coatings

In-Mold Coating for High-Performance Composite Finishing

Engineered Composites Incorporated (ECI) integrates in-mold coating technology to combine performance and aesthetics at the source of your products. Our in-mold coating options offer your products a breakthrough surface treatment that’s applied seamlessly during the molding process. The result is a durable chemical bond formed over the composite substrate, offering a premium surface finish and enhanced performance properties without the need for secondary painting or finishing steps.

Leveraging robotic application systems alongside extensive automated process integration, ECI offers consistent, high-quality surface-coated composites with superior aesthetics, durability, and/or performance for demanding applications.

Enhanced Aesthetics, Durability, and Performance

ECI’s in-mold coating process is designed to meet the needs of customers with unique applications that demand superior aesthetics and/or enhanced durability, while maintaining high-throughput production.

  • Superior Surface Finish – Consistent surface finishes with reduced porosity, pinholes, and fiber print-through – ideal for covering defects or creating premium paint-ready parts.
  • Enhanced Environmental Resistance – Improved UV stability, chemical resistance, and moisture protection integrated directly into the surface of the part.
  • Cycle Time Efficiency – Eliminates the need for secondary painting and surface finishing operations, simplifying your production process and potentially reducing costs.
  • Durability – Strong adhesion to the substrate reduces the risk of cosmetic or functional failures in the field, especially for applications prone to abrasion and impacts.

Our robotic coating systems ensure uniform coverage, precision application, and compatibility with various composite materials, including sheet molding compound (SMC) and bulk molding compound (BMC).

A Look Inside ECI’s In-Mold Coating Process

In-mold coating is a specially formulated material that we apply directly onto the mold surface prior to compression molding. During the molding process, the coating chemically bonds to the part, forming a high-strength adhered layer that covers defects and enhances surface appearance while improving durability in several ways.

Unlike traditional coatings applied after molding, our in-mold coatings form a unified layer that resists chipping, peeling, and delamination. The result is improved resistance to UV, temperature, and weathering, critical in many structural, exterior, and high-impact applications. Plus, we can often eliminate the need for additional post-processing, saving our customers the time and cost of secondary painting or other product finishing steps.

In-Mold Coating Solutions Engineered for Your Product Application

ECI’s in-mold coating capabilities benefit a wide range of industries and end product applications, especially those in which both surface quality and durability are critical requirements.
